There was high drama as Wales Rally GB, the deciding round of the 2011 World Rally Championship, got underway with two runs over the all-asphalt Great Orme stage.

Sebastien Ogier crashed approximately 1.6 kilometres into the first run of the 4.74-kilometre test, taking a wheel off his Citroen DS3 WRC. It is understood his damaged car will be transported back to the permanent service park in Builth Wells where his mechanics will attempt to carry out repairs to enable him to restart under SupeRally regulations on day two.

Although Ogier dropped out of contention for the world title when he retired on the previous round in Spain, he was planning to play a supporting role to team-mate and championship leader Sebastien Loeb.

Mikko Hirvonen's bid to win his first World Rally Championship title is over after he was forced to stop on the road section heading back to service in Builth Wells.
The Finn damaged the radiator on his Ford Fiesta RS WRC striking a submerged branch on the Dyfnant stage. He tried to return to service in Builth Wells, a journey of more than 100 kilometres, but failed to get beyond the town of Newtown.

He told WRC.com: "It was very tricky in the morning and the grip level was changing quite a lot. On one braking [point] it was very slippery and I was too fast into the next corner. There was a big slide and the rear touched the bank. I spun and it pulled the front of the car into a bank where there was a tree stump. The wood came through the radiator. There was no real damage but we lost all the water in the engine. We carried on for five-six kilometres but that was it."

Hirvonen had just taken the lead of the event and said he felt confident he could hold on for victory.

"I felt really good. There were some slippery places but I was still able to push, although maybe not much more. It's a hard rally and you can always have moments like that."

Of his title chances, the Finn added: "Like you said it's over for sure. I have to thank the team for a really good effort and all the help. Unfortunately we have to look to the future and see what we can do in the future."

Ford Abu Dhabi team principal Malcolm Wilson said: "It's devastating to go out in an incredible battle with Sebastien Loeb. We will try to fix the car but it does look like there's too much damage to the engine. I believe the damage is already done, but our main priority is to get him back here and out again tomorrow. It's a huge disappointment for the whole team after getting back into the championship fight again and then sadly losing it on the first day of the event."

Cardiff - Sebastien Loeb (Citroen) bo v nedeljo osmič postal svetovni prvak v reliju. Drugi dan zadnjega relija sezone je namreč odstopil njegov edini tekmec za naslov, Mikko Hirvonen (Ford).

Finec Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) je imel pred sedmo hitrostno preizkušnjo relija Velika Britanija minimalno prednost pred Francozom Sebastienom Loebom (Citroen), nakar je poškodoval svoj dirkalnik, izgubil skoraj štiri minute in nazadoval na 13. mesto. Avtomobil je bil preveč poškodovan, da bi ga lahko do popoldanskega nadaljevanja relija popravili. Èetudi se Hirvonen na reli vrne v soboto, nima več realnih možnosti za naslov prvaka, saj bo dobil 20 minut pribitka. "Potrebovali bi čudež. Motor je bil predolgo brez vode in zato je res potreben čudež, da bi še usposobili," so sporočili iz Fordove tovarniške ekipe. Poraz je priznal tudi že Hirvonen, ki je v cilju usodne hitrostne preizkušnje dejal, da je konec njegovih sanj o naslovu.

Loeb je imel pred finalno dirko osem točk prednosti in lahko zdaj previdno odpelje zadnjih 16 "brzincev". "Do konca je relija je še veliko in zato se še ne smatramo za prvake," ostaja previden Loebov sovoznik, Monačan Daniel Elena. Sebastien Loeb je dodal: "Zdaj je situacija manj stresna, a prvenstvo še ni končano. Èe pa Mikko res ne bo štartal v soboto, potem pa smo prvaki."

Prva sobotna preizkusnja bo kot kaze klestila med Citroeni DS3 WRC. Ze na poti na preizkusnjo je obstal P. Solberg, domnevno zaradi pocene cevi za gorivo, kmalu po zacetku SS12 pa vmesni casi kazejo, da Raikkonenov DS3 zaostaja ze 20 minut, torej gre za tezavo in morebiten odstop.

Sicer je SS12 dobil Loeb pred Latvalo in tako svoje vodstvo povisal za skoraj 6 sekund.

Sebastien Loeb has been involved in a road accident leaving stage 18, Halfway.

The Citroen ace and co-driver Daniel Elena, plus the occupants of the car, are all understood to be uninjured. However, Loeb's DS3 WRC has been damaged to the point he is unable to continue to the next stage, Crychan.

A spokesperson for the Citroen Total World Rally Team: "The other car was coming towards Seb and Dani on the wrong side of the road. It's not possible to make repairs, they are out of the rally."

On hearing the news, Loeb's team-mate Sebastien Ogier said: "It's a big shame for sure."

Citroen team members are now trying to get the car back to service in Builth Wells in order to carry out repairs to enable the Frenchman to reach the podium in Cardiff this afternoon where he will celebrate the eighth world title he clinched on Friday.

Loeb's exit hands Jari-Matti Latvala a comfortable lead on the World Rally Championship finale. It also promotes Mads Ostberg and Henning Solberg into second and third places respectively.

Loeb secured the 2011 world crown when title rival Mikko Hirvonen retired on Friday with engine damage. Had the Finn not hit trouble then Loeb's retirement could have handed Hirvonen his first world championship accolade.

Loeb odstopil v Walesu

Cardiff - Francoski reli zvezdnik Sebastien Loeb svoj osmi naslov svetovnega prvaka ne bo potrdil z uspehom na zadnji preizkušnji svetovnega prvenstva, reliju po Walesu. Med 18. in 19. hitrostno preizkušnjo je namreč doživel nesrečo, zaradi pokvarjenega hladilnika v motorju svojega citroena je moral odstopiti. Do odstopa je bil Loeb, ki si je osmi naslov prvaka zagotovil v soboto, ko je v Walesu odstopil njegov konkurent Finec Mikko Hirvonen, na drugem mestu, minimalno je zaostajal le za Fincem Jari-Mattijem Latvalo.

"Hladilnik je poškodovan, a bomo avto poskušali usposobiti, da se bo Sebastien z njim lahko vsaj povzpel na zmagovalni oder," so dejali pri Citroenu.
